How to install the Recover Text Converter

The Recover Text Converter is an optional file converter for Microsoft Word that allows it to recover text from any file. It may be useful for recovering text from badly corrupted or damaged Microsoft Word documents.

To install the Recover Text Converter you will need to run Microsoft Office Setup in maintenance mode. If you don't have administrator privileges or access to the Microsoft Office installation discs then you may need to ask your system administrator to do this for you.

The exact sequence of steps may depend which version of Microsoft Office or Microsoft Word you have, but the process will be something like this:

Run Microsoft Office Setup

  • Close all Microsoft Office programs.
  • Open Control Panel and then open Add or Remove Programs.
  • Select Microsoft Office or Microsoft Word from the Currently installed programs list, and click Change.

Add the Recover Text Converter

  • On the Maintenance Mode Options window click Add or Remove Features and click Next.
  • On the Custom Setup window, tick Choose advanced customization of applications and click Next.
  • On the Advanced Customization window, click + to expand Office Shared Features.
  • Click + to expand Converters and Filters.
  • Click + to expand Text Converters.
  • Click the arrow beside Recover Text Converter.
  • Click Run from My Computer.
